1st SKBJ Junior Chess Championship 2015

23 Feb 2015, Kuala Lumpur – Here is a new tournament for the juniors in Bukit Jelutong, Shah Alam.

For the first time ever, SK Bukit Jelutong in Shah Alam will be organizing a Junior Chess Championship 2015 event to be held on the weekend of 7th March and 8th March 2015 at its school campus located in Jalan Serambi U8/21. The 1st SKBJ Junior Chess Championship 2015 is an open event intended for junior players – both boys and girls, below the age of 12 years old and 9 years old.  In order to make the tournament even more attractive to the participants, the organizer has registered the Junior Chess Championship as a National Rated event and it is targeting to have up to 200 players playing in its inaugural edition. Whilst the majority of the players are expected to be those from around Shah Alam area and the surrounding Klang Valley districts, the school is also expecting a sizeable participant to come from neighboring states such as Perak, Pahang and Negeri Sembilan. The 2-day event will use a time control of 25 minutes to finish over 8 rounds of play – 6 rounds to be played on Saturday with the balance 2 rounds to be played on Sunday.

A total prize fund of more than RM 3,500 has been set aside for the eventual winners with special prizes to be given away to the top 3 school teams in each age category who have amassed the most points through out the tournament.  In order to be eligible for the best school team prizes, schools have to field 4 players to participate in the event and the 3 school that highest number of points accumulated by its players will be declared the winners.

Closing date for this event is 28th February 2015 and only the first 200 players will be accepted for entry. Beyond the number that has been allocated, acceptance of registration will solely be at the discretion of the organizer – pending space and equipment availability.

8 Feb 2015, Kuala Lumpur – Here is news of an upcoming chess tournament in Kelantan this coming February 2015.

The ZADANO KELANTAN OPEN is now back on the calendar with the new date now set for the upcoming Chinese New Year Holidays. Scheduled for 20th and 21st February 2015, the venue for the event including the prize fund, time control and game schedule remains unchanged. Those who have registered for the event previously (for the original date in December) ARE ADVISED TO REGISTER THEIR NAMES AGAIN as all registrations from the earlier dates have been cancelled and ARE NOT AUTOMATICALLY ACCEPTED for the new dates. This is to make sure that there are no duplicated entries and space allocations are properly managed.

As mentioned in the previous circulation for the event, the Kelantan Open will adopt the rapid time control of 25 minutes each player per game to be played to the finish over 9 rounds of chess - 4 rounds to be played on Friday with another 5 to be played the following day. The tournament will also be tagged for FIDE rating - one of the few Rapid events in the country to do so. This will be a great opportunity for players to gain new rating points, and for new players to be recognised for the effort in accordance to the global ranking system.

A total prize fund of RM 5,700 has been set aside for this tournament with the eventual champion to be awarded RM2,000 for his/her effort. The second placed player is set to bag RM1,000 with another RM700 to be awarded to the third player. Special prizes have also been set aside for PCNK members and to the best lady player in the tournament.

FREE entry fees for titled players e.g. GM, WGM, IM, WIM including untitled players who has a FIDE rating of 2400 or higher. Entry fees for others are RM60 for those with a FIDE rating and those without FIDE rating, the entry fees shall be RM80. To encourage more PCNK members to participate, a 25% discount will be given to those who are registered PCNK members.

Only 200 seats are reserved for the event so, book your places early and let us set our compass for Kota Bharu during the Chinese New Year  Holidays and spend it on good chess and good friends!

NTU of Singapore wins Inter Varsity Chess 2015

3 Feb 2015, Kuala Lumpur – Here are the final team standings of the annual chess event – Inter Varsity GACC 2015 held in University of Malaya Kuala Lumpur recently.

Team Nanyang Technological University of Singapore won with a score of 26.5 points. Second was RV College of Engineering of India with 25.5 points and third, National University of Singapore (NUS) with 23.5 points. Team Sunway was fourth with 22.5 points.
