Final Results of Hari Raya Classical Chess, 23-24 September 2009

The final round results and ranking of the Hari Raya Classical Chess held at Excel Chess Academy, OUG, Kuala Lumpur from 23-24 September 2009 are as shown in the following two tables.

Incredibly, Jax Tham wins the Hari Raya Classical Chess and manages to turn the tables against the top seed, Abdullah Che Hassan with ease in the sixth and final round of play. Fantastic play by Jax Tham, who happens to be the organiser of this Hari Raya Classical Chess 2009.

Jax Tham in serious combat.

A total of 22 local players participated in this Hari Raya Classical Chess 2009 held by Excel Chess Academy. For the first time, there is some cash prizes to be won for the top three positions in this Classical Chess series of tournaments, mooted and spearheaded by Jax Tham, almost single-handedly. That is a proud achievement for this veteran chess player from Malaysia!

The fun hasn't stopped there, though. There will be another Classical Chess in early October 2009, to be held from 2nd to 4th October 2009 for the monthly First Friday Classical Chess. All chess enthusiasts interested in playing the 90 mins. classical chess time control, pls contact Jax Tham at his email: jaxtham@hotmail.com or his handphone number 013-3232280.

Game For More

by SS Quah

Even on a limited budget, we can still host interesting tournaments that attract strong foreign players.

ONE observation made by Malaysian Chess Federation honorary life president Datuk Tan Chin Nam at the prize-giving ceremony of the Malaysia Open last month was that chess promotion need not mean holding elite tournaments graced by the best players.

It was a statement that struck a chord. He was right, of course.

Best of the best: Vietnam’s Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son accepting his prize from Masterskill University College of Health Sciences director Tunku Kamel Tunku Rijaludin.

Let’s leave the elite tournaments to organisers with the big bucks. If we spend within our means, we can still hold interesting tournaments that attract reasonably strong foreign players.

After all, as Tan reasoned, chess professionals still have to make a living off the game.

Through the Malaysia Chess Festival, we provide opportunities for players to enjoy themselves and win some cash prizes, aside from raising the standard of the local game and enabling them to earn their international title norms.

A successful chess event by Tan’s interpretation then would mean having a tournament that satisfies these conditions: that it must be organised for the players, by the players and be about the players.

If I were to draw a conclusion about the Malaysia Chess Festival based on these conditions, then yes, the event was a success.

The same could be said about the Masterskill Kuala Lumpur Open held earlier this month. I could apply the same three conditions to the KL Open and come to the conclusion that it, too, was a success for the Kuala Lumpur Chess Association.

Of course, I cannot compare the KL Open to the Malaysia Open.

They were two completely different tournaments although they shared many similarities. Both were equally competitive and suspenseful. Players jostled for position and they jostled hard for the points.

Nevertheless, the smaller number of players in the KL Open together with a more compact playing area gave the tournament its own special characteristic.

Players were sitting closer to one another, almost elbow to elbow in many cases. Not one of the visiting grandmasters or international masters minded. No prima donnas among them, they came here to play chess and enjoy a bit of competitive fun.

On the chess board, there were big battles. But as much as I would like to say that it was a very tight race to the finish point, it wasn’t exactly so.

The second half of the tournament was dominated by a 19-year-old grandmaster from Vietnam. Presently, Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son is ranked as No.2 in his country.

At the Malaysia Open, he was among four or five players who remained unbeaten throughout that event. With a little more luck, he could have tied for the first place too.

Well, at the KL Open, he showed why his consistency has made him one of Vietnam’s brightest chess stars.

After the fourth round, he shared the top position with two other players but by the end of the fifth round, he was leading the field. However, he allowed his compatriot, the veteran Vietnamese grandmaster Dao Thien Hai, to catch up with him on points and for two rounds, they were running neck and neck towards the finish post.

Dao, however, slipped up in the eighth round. Here was the perfect chance for the 19-year-old. Obviously, he had learnt his lesson at the Malaysia Open and went into the final round with a lot of determination.

He refused to accept any other result but a win and in the end, he got what he wanted: a valuable point from the Uzbekistan grandmaster Marat Dzhumaev.

In second place was Indonesian grandmaster Susanto Megaranto who was just half a point behind the winner. Interestingly enough, Susanto is also the second highest ranked player in his country so there was also a lot of pressure on him to perform.

Unfortunately, he had a poor start, losing two of his first five games. But thereafter, he managed to pull his game together and reeled off consecutive wins in his last four games. His most important point came in the last round when he beat Dao.

Result Of The First Friday Classical Chess, 4-6 September 2009

(click on picture to view larger image)

Last weekend the 2nd First Friday Classical Chess was held at the Excel Chess Academy, Overseas Union Garden, Kuala Lumpur from 4-6 September 2009.

Seven players participated in the chess tournament which used the 90 min. plus 30 second increment per game format.

Mr. Francis Tan came out tops over five rounds of play while Jax Tham, the tournament host, was second, Anthony Tan was third. Surprisingly, Kaushal Khandar, finished a distant sixth.

Let's hope the next First Friday Classical Chess in October 2009, will continue to have more players participate as playing in such a long time control locally is far and few. So having one nearby should be good for everyone to participate.

Kudos to the tournament organiser and to continue hosting such tournaments in the future.

In the afternoon of 7th September 2009, the seventh round of the Kuala Lumpur Chess Open 2009 began with the top board seeing the two top seeds GM Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son (Vie), 2589 and GM Thien Hai Dao (Vie), 2542 play each other.

Picture 1. Hasian Panggabean (Ina), 2262 lost to

NM Edward Lee (Mas) in the sixth round.

Both players have 5 points after six rounds of play and are primed as favourites of the KL Open 2009. A pack of three players are at 4.5 points:- IM Irwanto Sadikin (Ina), FM Pak Yevgeniy (Kaz) and GM Dzhumaev Marat (Uzb). While another big group of 13 players are stack at 4.0 points.

With the Malaysian pack, NM Lee Kim Han (Mas) came out tops with 3.5 points after triumphing over Hasian Panggabean (Ina) while next up is the young gun Wong Jianwen overwhelming the Filipino, Edmundo Legaspi, 2158. Most relieved is to see Haslindah Ruslan breaking the duck with a fine win over Chan Yi Jun Timothy of Singapore in the sixth round.

On the 7th September 2009, Monday, play will begin at 8.30 am for the 6th round of the Kuala Lumpur Chess Open 2009 being played at Shah's Village Hotel, Petaling Jaya, Selangor from 4th - 8th September 2009. On top board, GM Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son (Vie) will meet IM Irwanto Sadikin (Ina) to see who gets to lead into the 7th round of the tournament. On board 2, we will see IM Liu Dede (Ina) squaring off with GM Thien Hai Dao (Vie) and on board 3, CM Nguyen Hoang Nam will challenge GM Dzhumaev Marat (Uzb).

Picture 1. WIM Muminova Nafisa (Uzb)
While WIM Muminova Nafisa (Uzb) is at 2.5 points after 5 rounds and is playing against Kalugampitiya R.S. (Sri Lanka) on board 14.
For our Malaysian players, there will, generally, be playing on the lower boards. NM Edward Lee on board 17 against P Hasian (Ina), NWM Tan Li Ting on board 30 against our own Ismail Ahmad (Mas), our young gun Wong Jianwen on board 18 playing Legaspi Edmundo (Phi). While our lady veteran campaigner Haslindah Ruslan is still without a point on the scoreboard after 5 rounds. Let's hope everyone will get some points moving towards the seventh round in the afternoon. Best of luck to all players!

As with all KLCA events, the Kuala Lumpur Open and Young Talent Team Chess Challenge, is to support the development of chess in KL and Malaysia, and so is positioned as an event to provide International Master title opportunities for players from the ASEAN region.

In the Open, once again there is a large and comprehensive turnout from Indonesian neighbours and this year they have shown that they are good friends indeed of the KL Open with 17 entries represented by players from all over Indonesia and at all levels, amongst them Grandmaster Susanto Megaranto, International Masters Sadikin Irwanto, Dede Liu, and Tirto, FIDE Masters Wahono Awam and Mahmud Sharif, Candidate Master Farid Firman Shah, and so on.

Singapore has 10 players, led by FIDE Masters Timothy Chan Wei Xuan and Daniel Chan Yi-Ren (unrelated), both who are amongst their countries best young talent and genuine International prospects today.

Uzbekistan Grandmasters Saidali Iuldashev and Marat Dzhumaev are no strangers to Malaysia but the KL Open is new to them and they are for sure in the absence of their defending champion countryman Anton Filippov, and joining them is their National Champion, International Woman Master Nafisa Muminova. Of the six Grandmasters playing, Vietnam is contributing three - half the total! They have five players, three of which are members of the Vietnam National Team that was the big surprise of the Dresden Olympiad late last year where they were the top Asia team!

Grandmaster Nguyen Anh Dung was always coming together with Nguyen Van Nuy but it was a big surprise when one of their rising stars, young Grandmaster Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son also asked to play and then Grandmaster Dao Tien Hai informed us he was just back to Vietnam and that he would be coming together with Nguyen Hoang Nam! So, from a planned event for International master title norms for the 2300 level players and opportunities to increase their ratings for others we had in one stroke become a Grandmaster event!

Last year the KL Open was a disaster for the strong Philippine delegation but it is a clash with a national elimination event that has seen a much smaller group this year, just four players (or officially five if including locally based Ian Udani who is a constant top prize winner at all Malaysian events), International Master Richard Bitoon, 2362 rated Rustum Tolentino, International Woman Master Beverly Mendoza, and National Master Edmundo Legaspi.
Notables from the other countries participating are Yevgeniy Pak, the young 17 year old Kazakhstan National Champion with many International Master norms already, and our good friend from Sri Lanka, Luxman Wijesuriya who recently agreed to a developmental partnership with KLCA and has started the ball rolling by entering two prospects, that of R.S. Kalugampitiya and R.D.A.C. Dissanayake.

Glenda Chen I-Chen is the sole entry from from Chinese Taipei (Taiwan) and we also welcome this brave young lady who is about to start a Masters program in University as the KL Open will indeed be a baptism of fire for someone who has not touched a chess piece in anger since the Dresden Olympiad in November 2008!

Malaysia of course is represented by both veterans and some young for the future. Ismail Ahmad is a seasoned campaigner as is Haslindah Ruslan and even Najib Abdul-Wahab who is usually an arbiter has joined in. Edward Lee, 16, and Tan Li Ting, 11, are National Champions and Wong Jianwen is perhaps the most promising young player to emerge recently.
